Sunday’s game against Doncaster Rovers Belles saw Sunderland Ladies crash out of the continental tyres cup.
Straight of the bat it was apparent that the team were advancing with a different approach to the previous league games. The cup was never a priority as the lasses aim to avoid relegation this season, this however was still a surprise when the lineup was revealed showing Rachael Laws, Steph Bannon, Steph Roche and Beth Mead (who had picked up a knock) started on the bench.
After a shaky start Sunderland seemed to be picking up pace, mostly being labelled as the better team however it wasn’t to be when Doncaster took the lead first with a perfectly executed header past Olsen. It went into half time with the Belles in the lead and Sunderland desperately looking for an equaliser.
We continued our wonderful play in the second half and subbed on the Irish star Stephanie Roche. Just minutes later Ramshaw managed to find the equaliser and it looked as if it would be heading to extra time…
However the team fell to another late header by the Belles team and we crashed out of the cup in a 2-1 loss to them despite our improved team performance.
The two teams face off next week in the league and it is a must win game for both teams who are in a relegation battle.
