Sunderland Stars Extend Contracts

In the past 2 days we were delighted to hear of the news of contract extensions for 2 of our stars.

On the 8th of June it was announced that Patrick Van Aanholt had penned a new deal which will see him remain on Wearside for another 4 years, until 2020. The Dutchman has had an impressive career with the black cats; he joined us in 2014 from Chelsea and has made 69 appearances for us. The quick left-back has scored 5 goals for us, and had 4 of them in our premier league survival last season. Sam Allardyce spoke to SAFC on the new deal, saying the 25 year old “was an outstanding performer last season, contributing not only to solid defensive performances, but also assists and vital goals. It is fantastic to be able to secure the long-term services of such a talented footballer and athlete.”

The next day it was announced that striker Jermain Defoe has also put pen to paper on a new deal with the club, keeping him with us for 3 more years, until 2019. Defoe also joined the black cats 2014 from a swap deal with Toronto FC in exchange for Jozy Altidore. He has proved vital for the club, scoring 18 goals in the last season, 15 of those in the league to help save the club from relegation, and has scored 22 goals in 53 appearances. He finished 3rd highest English goal-scorer for the 15/16 season, falling only behind Jamie Vardy of champions Leicester, and Harry Kane of 3rd place Tottenham. Big Sam commented that Jermain is “one of the greatest goal scorers in the history of the premier league” and went on to say “we are very pleased that we have been able to extend his stay with us”.

We hope to see many more appearances and goals from the 2 in their coming seasons with the black cats, and wish them all the best of luck in this.
